South Texas Electric Cooperative Urges Caution for Pokémon Go players

South Texas Electric Cooperative is warning players of the Pokémon Go game to stay away from electric substations, power plants, power lines, and other electric equipment.

Pokémon Go is a location-based augmented reality video game for iOS and Android devices. Players travel in the real world in search of different Pokémon species to train, capture, and battle with. The Pokémon are found using “geocaching”. Players can be lead into some dangerous environments if they do not take the necessary caution to avoid them.

South Texas Electric Cooperative urges all Pokémon Go players to follow some important safety tips when playing:

• Stay away from electric substations, power plants, power lines, other electric equipment, and work sites.

• Electric transformers can be extremely dangerous and should only be handled by a trained professional. Do not approach them or contact them in any way.

• Fallen power lines can still carry dangerous levels of electric current. Stay clear of all power lines.

• Do not attempt to climb power poles or anything near a power line such as trees.
